KWRU Statement on G8

The Kensington Welfare Rights Union and the Poor People’s Economic Human Rights Campaign join the international community this week in raising our voice against an economic model which has created unprecedented levels of misery, not only in the 3rd world, but in wealthy countries as well. Meanwhile, our planet possesses unprecedented levels of wealth.

As a movement of the poor in the United States, we know in painful detail the misery of poverty, hunger and homelessness. The gap between rich and poor exists not only between countries, but within all of our countries. We, residents of the world’s richest country, also experience the anguish of poverty, of not knowing how to keep our loved ones alive for another day.

The world must understand that within the G8 countries, the world's wealthiest countries, there is a growing poverty that is also killing people. For it is the same economic model of vast inequality from which we, like most of the rest of the world, suffer. The economic model that creates misery in Africa and around the world is the same model that is killing our children here in the US, our children who are also homeless, without basic health care and hungry. The poor in every country are being robbed of our basic human rights to life, to the basic necessities that we need to survive.

We the poor in the United States join with the poor of the world and with all people of conscience, because all of our lives depend on it.

El Kensington Welfare Rights Union y La Campaña de los Pobres por los Derechos Humanos Económicos se juntan con la comunidad internacional esta semana para levantar nuestras voces contra un modelo económico que ha criado un nivel sin precedente de miseria, no sólo en el tercer mundo, pero también en los países ricos. Mientras, nuestro planeta alcanza a un nivel sin precedente de riqueza.

Como movimiento de los pobres en los EEUU, conocemos con detalles dolorosos la miseria de la pobreza, el hambre y estar sin casa. La diferencia entre los ricos y los pobres existe no solo entre países, pero también a dentro de todos nuestros países. Nosotros, residentes del país más rico del mundo, también conocemos la angustia de la pobreza, de no saber cómo mantener vivos nuestros queridos por un día más.

El mundo tiene que entender que entre los países del G8, los países más ricos del mundo, hay una pobreza creciendo que está matando a la gente. Es el mismo modelo económico de inigualdad en que vivimos, y como los demás del mundo, sufrimos. El modelo económico que cría miseria en Africa y por todo el mundo es el mismo modelo que está matando a los niños aquí en los EEUU, nuestros hijos quienes están sin casa, sin atención médica básica y con hambre. Están robando a los pobres de todos los países sus derechos básicos a la vida y las necesidades básicas para sobrevivir.

Nosotros los pobres en los EEUU nos unimos con los pobres de todo el mundo y con la gente de conciencia porque todas nuestras vidas dependen de él.
