Sunday Night
Film Series Battle For Broad
This documentary
follows the work of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union, capturing the
tension and excitement of four days in the summer of 2000 leading up to
the Republican National Convention. With the eyes of the world upon them,
poor and homeless people gathered under the banner of the Poor Peoples
Economic Human Rights Campaign to take on the Philadelphia police in a
battle to hold an un-permitted march against poverty on the Conventions
opening day.
Following
the film there will be a panel of speakers to talk more about the film,
the experience of organizing the 2000 March, how our communities have
fared during these past 4 years, and plans for a March For Our Lives on
opening day of this summers Republican National Convention in New
York City. Speakers include Cheri Honkala founder of KWRU and national
coordinator of the Poor Peoples Economic Human Rights Campaign,
Henry Nicholas, Pres. of National Union of Hospital & Health Care
Employees, Liz Ortiz Chair of KWRUs local organizing committee,
& Sara Forgione, KWRU Chief of Staff.
