Statement on the Election

The re-election of President Bush is both devastating to the poor in the
U.S. and throughout the World. However Democrats have issued devastating
blows in our lives as well. We must remember that is was a Democratic
President who ended welfare as an entitlement and who signed and began
to implement the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
This should be just
a further signal to us that we are on track in our efforts to educate
and organize every hurting person across this country. Going hungry and
homeless and jobless in this wealthy nation are not things our families
are going to settle for. Let this recent election push us deeper into
the communities - not to ask them which politician can save our lives
- but to push us deeper into the community for the development of leaders
on every block across America.

La
reelección del Presidente Bush es un golpe devastador por los pobres
en los Estados Unidos y en todo el mundo. Sin embargo, los democratas
han dado golpes devastadores en nuestras vidas también. Tenemos
que recordarnos que fue un presidente democrata que terminó el
bienestar social como derecho en los EEUU, y que firmo y implemento el
Tratado de Libre Comercio de Norteamerica (TLCAN).
Esto debe ser un señal adicional para nosotros que estamos en el rumbo correcto en nuestros esfuerzos de educar y organizar a cada persona que sufre en este país. Vivir con hambre y sin casa y sin trabajo en esta nación rica no es algo que nuestras familias aceptaremos. Que esta elección reciente nos anime a meternos aun mas profundamente adentro de nuestras comunidades - no para preguntarles cual politico puede "salvar" nuestras vidas - sino para meternos mas profundamente adentro de las comunidades por el desarrollo de líderes en cada cuadra de los Estados Unidos.
Envienos o llaménos hoy si quiere involucrarse en la lucha para reclamar nuestro país.
