Families
of Bushville USA take over Army Recruiters Office:
Money For Housing Not For War!
|

Early this afternoon members of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union
attempted to meet with the Office of Housing and Urban Development
in Philadelphia. Soon after the families entered the building the
elevators were turned off and we were denied our right to speak with
government officials.
|

Chanting "What
do we want for the Holidays: Housing Housing" Several dozen members
of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union filled the balcony holding
signs and dropping banners over the railing.
|

The growing protest
then moved to the Army Recruiting Office at Broad and Arch where the
families then took over the Army Recruiting Office. Several
dozen people filled the small front office while others set up signs
out side and passed out fliers to those passing by.
|

The families
are demanding to meet with Alphonso Jackson, the current Secretary
of Housing and Urban Development, fly to Philadelphia to witness
firsthand the impact the recent budget cuts made by the Bush Administration
have had on the families in this city.
Homes for the
Holidays: Operation Bring the Money Home is asking why billions
can be spent on the War and still Nothing for the Poor.
|

Our numbers swelled as members of New Jerusalem Laura, the Simple
Way and Adapt joined us in support of finding money for affordable
housing in Philadelphia. |

Several members of the Bushville currently have family members fighting
in Iraq. They joined up as a last chance to get healthcare and housing
for their families. |
 |
Our sit in
came to an abrupt halt when the fire department arrived to physically
remove those in wheelchairs from the the recruiters office.
Making the
decision not to get arrested we held a candle light prayer outside
of the office and returned to the Bushville and continued to organize
for our
trip to HUD in DC on Monday.
