Bushville
USA Hosts Vigil and Strategy Session
with Religious Community
|
 |
On Sunday November
28th, members of Churches from all over the Philadelphia area met
at Tent City yesterday to discuss the role of the religious community
in the movement to end poverty. There were members in attendance from
Germantown Friends, the Simple Way, St. Vincent's, Moorestown Friends,
Brandywine Peace Community and more. |
 |
The discussion
focused on the role of religious communities in the movement to
end poverty.
Citing the
need of religious communities to deepen their ties with social action
groups and move beyond the charity model, many suggestions were
voiced.
|
| Claiming
the teachings of Jesus as our own, we talked about the need for us
to take an active role in bringing the message of economic human rights
to our schools, churches, and peace groups. |
The discussion
was rich in faith and hope, expressing a common sense of spirituality
where one faith and/or tradition is not privileged over others.
Our different roots can join together in this movement and we do
not have to create a new spirituality. We must pull from the richness
of all our traditions to truly create and better world.

 |
After the strategy
session the overcrowded tent spilled out onto the lot for a candle
light prayer service. In between the gusts of wind and threat of rain
we prayed for all those who have no place to sleep during the holidays
and asked that our voices be heard and our rights be recognized. |
