In Permanent Memory of a Fallen General and Heroine of the "Havenots" in the Struggle to End Poverty,

Diane Bernard,

Former President of the Michigan Welfare Rights Organization, A Leader of the National Welfare Rights Union and the Economic Human Rights Campaign passed away April 4, 1999.

In this promised "...Land of the Free and Home of the Brave", the bravest have no home and the land of plenty is not free of want and poverty. Emerging from among the ranks of those who are the bravest and burdened by deprivation are leaders, teachers, and fighters determined to make America be what it set out to be, a land and home where everybody has the "unalienable rights to... life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." These are the principles and program for which we fight and for which Diane dedicated her life. Diane was a poor black mother and revolutionary in the truest sense of the word. What we will forever remember most about her is her fearless clarity and firm commitment to human dignity and human happiness. She was a General and now a Giant whose shoulders we all must now stand on and draw strength from. The following are comments she made at the Malcolm X Conference in 1991, New York City:

"The war is on. The war is between two classes. The class of the Haves and the class of the Havenots... We have enrolled and in many cases been drafted into this war of the victims of needs, the victims of want... "Don't tell me that a poor white mother who witnessed her three children burned up in a house fire is unfit to lead this struggle. She has a personal vendetta against the government. She'll fight harder than anybody who's out here just reading books and talking a bunch of bullcrap because it sounds good and feels good. She will fight because she has a personal stake, because they hurt her. Those are the kind of fighters we need and I'll follow her anywhere, anytime. We have to embrace those mothers. Take them under our wings and give them the ammo they need to fight. That is, a proper education about who this enemy is and where this enemy is and how we go about destroying this enemy. And restructuring a society that could allow... children to burn up because you don't have money to pay for gas. And natural gas is so plentiful in this country that nobody should have to pay for it."

Tell'm Diane!

Respectfully, the War Council of the Kensington Welfare Rights Union
